Advanced Bookmarking

This article explains some of the finer points of creating bookmarks in EVE. It is assumed you already know about BasicBookmarking, InstaJumps (and why they are obsolete) and how to copy a bookmark.

Explained below are safespots, undocking bookmarks, tactical bookmarks and scanning bookmarks.

A tip in general: if you bookmark a spot in a deadspace and warp to it, you will end up at the accelerator gate leading into the first level of that deadspace. If the deadspace disappears (like a mission deadspace, instead of a complex), you will warp to the exact spot in space where the deadspace was. This is a good way to pick up loot you leave behind in a mission deadspace. Just kill all the npc's, bookmark at least one container on every level and pick up the loot after you call in the mission success and the deadspace disappears.

Safespots

One creative way to use bookmarks is to create so-called safespots (SS). SS are spots in space, at no particular object. Having bookmarks to such locations can be very useful if you're being followed or want to be hard to find, since people will need to use scan probes to be able to warp to you.

When you are at a safespot, you will still show up on a scanner. So, it pays to create a safespot that is out of maximum scanning range (roughly 14.35 AU) of any of the objects in the system (gates, planets, moons etc.). It is easy to determine if you succeeded, by scanning at maximum range from the safespot. If nothing shows up, nothing is in range.

How to create safespots
Using the add bookmark button in the P&P window, you can create bookmarks while you are warping. The resulting bookmark will mark the point you were at when the server got that request. It takes a bit of practice to get bookmarks right in the middle of a warp, but it is possible.

Another way to get to safespot is by a technique called warp slamming. Warp slamming means draining your capacitor to a point where it is nearly empty. That way, you won't be able to make it to your destination and will drop out of warp somewhere inbetween start and end of the warp. One way to drain the capacitor is repeatedly going to warp and then cancelling it (by hitting Ctrl+Space).

Safespots and other bookmarks
If you create safespots that are inbetween locations you have bookmarked, you'll still be on the straight line between these locations. As a result, the bookmarks will work from the safespot, which will make the safespot a lot more useful.

Undocking bookmarks

If you're trying to avoid a camp that's on the station you're in, you need undocking bookmarks. You've probably noticed that you always undock stations at maximum speed. So, if you would have a bookmark straight ahead on the heading you have after undocking, you'd be able to go to warp immediately.

Since an undocking bookmark will be nothing but a bookmark in space, it will need to be 1000km away from the station for you to be able to warp to it from the station exit. The best way to setup an undocking bookmark is to get into the fastest ship you can fly (an interceptor with microwarp drive and nanofiber internals will work nicely). Undock in the fast ship and simply fly straight ahead in the direction your ship is moving right after it undocks. Keep flying until the station is at least 1000km behind you and bookmark that spot.

Test the bookmark by docking again, undocking and warping to it. Your ship should go to warp instantly.

Note that some stations are not suited for undocking bookmarks. There are several possible reasons for this:
In all of these cases, your ship will need a little time to align before being able to go to warp and warp to the undocking bookmark. Making one may still be worthwhile, but it won't be a 100% sure escape.

Some of these problems show up or disappear as changes are made to the models of the stations, which can happen in any major patch. So, be careful with undocking bookmarks right after patches.

Tactical bookmarks

Not all bookmarks are meant to be kept forever. When you're in combat, a good tactic to get some distance between yourself and the enemy fast can be to bookmark your current location, warp off and then warp back to the bookmark within a certain range. This will put you at that range from your original location, in the direction of the object you warped to.

Another application is getting to sniping distance. If you want to sit at a specific distance from a target location, to be able to snipe it, create a bookmark. Then warp off and warp back to the bookmark. You can repeat bookmarking, warping off and warping back to reach any distance you like.

This is usually faster than actually flying to that point, unless you have a very fast ship present that can fly to your preferred sniping spot, so you can warp to them. Remember though, that you can only warp to something that is at least 150km away from you.

Scanning bookmarks

If you want to stay out of sight, while being able to scan a location, like a gate or the outside of a station, you should get bookmarks to spots close to them. One of the best ways to make these, is this: warp from the first location to the second and bookmark while going into warp (with the location quickly receding) and while dropping out of warp (with the location quickly approaching).

This method will put the two spots inbetween the target locations and will make sure that arrive in the same place as your gang members behind you if you warp within the same distance of the target as them.
