This article describes the basics of Player vs. Player combat in EVE. It gives an overview of the typical roles in
PvP combat and offers a list of links leading to essential
PvP-related pages.
To gets started in
PvP, you'll have to read up on a few things. Its important that you understand the basics of game mechanics so you know how to counter whatever is being thrown at you and not feel so useless.
The first problem pilots encounter in they
can't do anything. This is a serious problem because there are several different things that could be happening. If the pilots did know what was happening they might have some way to counter it.
In
PvP things tend to happen too quickly though, and its quite hard to avoid getting killed if you have been taken by surprise, don't get the first lock, or are simply out-numbered. So besides needing an fairly broad understanding of the mechanics, that pretty much define how ships hit or miss each other, a pilot would also have to know how to avoid getting suckered into undesirable situations in the first place.
Recommended reading would be the article on
ElectronicWarfare and every link followed from that. That will show you the different options you have in fitting your ship for pvp and explain some of the maths that goes on behind the scenes.
