Storyline missions
This article explains how storyline missions are different from regular ones, how you get them and why you should run them if you do.
When do you get a storyline mission
Storyline missions are offered after you run 16 or more missions for agents of a single faction. The missions you run for an agent, are missions in service of the corporation the agent belongs to. A storyline mission however, is a mission for a faction as a whole and affects your standing towards that faction directly.
What makes storyline missions special
Storyline missions affect your standing to npcs in two ways:
They affect the standing towards the faction you are running for and all other factions it is friendly to. I.e. a Gallente storyline mission will increase Gallente standing as well as Minmatar, Sisters of Eve and all other factions with postitive standing to the Gallente faction. But it will decrease faction standing with all factions hostile (negative standing) to the Gallente faction like the Amarr and the Caldari.
Secondly, the corporation that the storyline agent is part of will greatly increase its standing towards you. Mind you, the corporation the storyline agent works for doesn't have to be the npc corp for whom you have been running missions sofar. Also, the agent itself will increase their standing towards you.
How to get the proper storyline agent
Ideally you would want the storyline agent to be of the npc corp that you have been running for, for a quick standing boost. The storyline agent closest to the last agent you ran for when you got the offer will be the agent offering the mission. You can use tools like
the EVE Explorer
to find out which storyline agent of the relevant faction is closest to the agent you are running missions for. If you choose your agent wisely, the closest storyline agent of the same faction will also work for the same corp.
